Are You Prepared For A Disaster?

Unless you have your head buried in the sand or perhaps a sports channel, you should know the world is a potentially scary place now.

There is the possibility of WWIII with high tensions with the United States and Iran, Russia, China, Hamas, Iraq and others.

With the southern border in the United States basically wide open, it's highly likely that terrorists are already here!

Outside of a potential for war, there has been crazy weather in the U.S. setting new records.

Crime is up in many places and happens often in brazen broad daylight events.

What can you do to prepare? Is there anything that you can do?

Below is a list of general things to consider:

Have emergency survival food for you and your family. If you are a business be sure that your employees can eat during emergency situations when you need them. Food should have a multi-year shelf life.

Water filtration and bottled water can be a lifesaving necessity. Do you have water containers?

Medicine is needed especially if you have a condition where you need medicine on a regular basis to survive such as insulin.

First Aid kits are necessary to treat wounds when someone becomes injured. Never assume you will be able to travel to a pharmacy, doctor or hospital. A pharmacy or doctor could also be closed.

CASH ON HAND~ Automatic teller machines could be down due to losing network connection or it may not be safe to travel to a machine. Cash is always king during a disaster! Keep some cash on hand at all times.

Emergency Power: You must think about how you are going to live without electricity. Do you have a generator? Fuel for the generator? Batteries? Ability to cook without electricity? Lights that operate on batteries? A portable battery station?

Do you have a source of heat or cooling when there is no power? Warm clothes, blankets, heaters that do not use electricity, battery operated fans.

Communication: How are you going to know what's going on in the world or your neighborhood if you have no electricity and perhaps it's too dangerous to travel? Consider buying a battery-operated FM radio, Shortwave radio, CB radios, GMRS radios, FRS radios, MURS radios or even a ham radio if you have an FCC amateur radio license. Cell towers could be down! 911 dispatch centers overloaded. How are you going to talk with someone outside your immediate area? CB, GMRS, FRS, MURS allow for 2-way communication! Do loved ones know how to contact you? Have you set up a meeting place and backup location should you lose contact?

How do you plan to protect yourself and loved ones from people breaking in and wanting your food and supplies? Do you have a gun? Do you have ammunition?

Cooking gear and tools. Think ahead of what you might need during a disaster.

Can you cut a tree limb if it's blocking your vehicles?

Books on survival. Also, a deck of cards or games for the children may help pass the time until power is restored.

Know your community’s vulnerabilities—Understanding what types of disasters are most likely to affect your location will help inform your plan.

Waste management and personal hygiene. Moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties, shovel and buckets may be needed.

A paper local map is great to have as you may not have power for GPS devices.

A printed list of emergency numbers and local services can be very helpful if cellular data services are down.

Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place.

Manually operated can opener for when electricity is out.

A whistle or air horn to signal neighbors and first responders where you are located and that you need help.

Insect repellent as you may need to go outside.

Masks, soap, hand sanitizer, battery or manual operated razor.

Do not allow vehicles to run low on fuel!

Let's acknowledge the big elephant in the room by saying buying these items at once can be expensive. This is why you must start picking up items along the way. Prioritize your list. The next time you go grocery shopping, throw an extra item or two in the basket for disaster preparedness.

The sooner you start, the better! If you found this article of value to you, please share it with family, friends, loved ones and all business associates.
