If a recruiter was involved, ask them questions about the company and who will be interviewing you.

What type of work environment do you prefer?

How did you hear about this position?

How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations?

Do you prefer working independently or on a team?

When you’re balancing multiple projects, how do you keep yourself organized?

Are you applying for other jobs?

Can you please explain any gaps in your resume.

What are your salary expectations?

You don’t want to sound robotic throughout your interview. It's an opportunity to show off your people skills! It's all about a human connection.

If your interview is in-person, arrive a little early and sit in your vehicle to review any notes. If you can't be on time for the interview, why would a perspective employer think that you would arrive to work on time.

If you have a virtual meeting, make sure you inform anyone living in the home that you have a very important meeting and you need them to be quiet during that time. Lock your door just before the interview. Having children screaming or a family member entering the room in their underwear may not help you land the job.

Test your computer video and sound quality before a virtual interview. Lighting is very important as well as camera placement. You want the light coming at you and not from behind you. The camera should be aimed at the middle of your face and not too far above or below.

Whether you interview is virtually or in person, be self-aware. What are you doing with your hands? Facial expression?

Becoming a customer of their products or services can help provide you with a better understanding of what they offer. This also provides you with a personal experience of your interaction with the company. You may can provide them with any problem issues, based on your experience, that you can help them address. Be careful though, if you point out a problem, they are very likely to immediately ask you for a solution.

Never put down your former employer or manager.

There is no need to discuss jobs or stories from a long time ago. Employers typically want to know what you have done recently and not 25 years ago.

If you have other job opportunities or offers, do not discuss them in this interview or act entitled.

Do not discuss politics or religion!

Keep any discussion regarding your personal life to a minimum.

When external recruiters are involved, it is important to know if they are the only company representing the company for the position. If they are not exclusive or are not employees of the company, do not allow them to say you are not qualified. You can easily go around them and go through a different recruiter. Find out who else is recruiting for that position or contact the companies HR department directly. Recruiters often do not fully understand the industry you are working in and recruit for multiple industries. It could be they are correct in your not being qualified or it could be they don't really understand the industry and are making some assumptions that are not correct. Remember that recruiters are in it for the money and only want to put forward candidates they feel will most likely get them their next paycheck..
